Chances are, if you are old enough to remember the first time leggings were popular, you're not all that excited to wear them again. But before you completely write off the past year's 80's inspired fashions, take a minute to consider some of the ways that the decade of excess can be updated for these less flashy times.
Cleaned-up hair metal
While the 80's version of the hair metal look was all about extremes, including big hair, men wearing more makeup than their girlfriends, and all manners of leather and acid-wash, today's take on this trend is much more subdued and polished.
For instance, while 1980's denim was acid-washed within an inch of its life, resulting in jeans that were almost white, today's acid wash is more subtle; try a pair of skinny black jeans that have been gently acid-washed to provide a more tie-dyed effect.
Metal's black leather is also enjoying a comeback; however, instead of dressing head-to-toe biker gear, pick one element, such as a buckled ankle boot or motorcycle jacket, and pair with a more toned-down, polished look.
Polished aerobics gear
Who can forget Olivia Newton-John's iconic video for "Physical"? Obviously, the legions of spandex-clad wannabes that the video spawned would look hopelessly out of place in 2009, even in a gym! However, recent runway and street looks have borrowed elements from this era, namely the ubiquitous legging.
There are several things to keep in mind when updating this look. First, remember that leggings should be used as a substitute for tights, not for pants. While you can wear a shorter skirt or dress with leggings than you would bare-legged, you should not make the leggings the only thing covering your bottom. Second, consider the length and material. While leggings of the 80's were often cropped to mid-calf and often trimmed with lace, a longer legging, even one with a stirrup, will lengthen your leg, while a more sophisticated fabric, like a textured knit or matte cotton blend will keep your look polished, not trendy.
Another aerobics-inspired look making a comeback is the off-the-shoulder sweatshirt. If you want to update this look, choose a shirt that was cut to be worn this way; taking a pair or scissors to your favorite lime-green sweatshirt is no longer an option! Look for quality fabrics like a satiny jersey that will drape nicely, and make sure to wear appropriate foundation garments; bra straps are never fashionable!
Finally, remember to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe the same way you do all trends: in moderation. One 80's inspired element is enough for any outfit, and remember; leave the Aqua-net at home!
