Hajj advice: How to make travel arrangements for Hajj

Once you are ready to take the Hajj it can be the journey of a lifetime and requires careful thought and planning to ensure that your spiritual journey is not marred by inadequate preparation. One of the most important tasks is making travel arrangements for Hajj. The Qur'an urges believers to "take provisions with you for the journey -", and making the right travel arrangements is one step in that direction.

Check the Ministry of Hajj website for approved travel agencies in the United States and elsewhere. There are many travel agencies to choose from so you are advised to compare prices and services offered by the various travel agencies. The listing of a specific, approved travel agency is not an endorsement and does not guarantee that the agency will satisfy all your travel needs. You are required to get references and check out the agency yourself.

Get quotes for Travel from the list of approved travel agencies and decide on a travel plan and flight. Before you do so, however, it is important that you prepare for the trip by understanding the rules and requirements for a Hajj. You need to apply for and be granted a visa from one of the travel agencies on the approved list. The travel agencies are responsible for providing you with housing, transportation and all required travel documents. This is another reason why it is so important that you choose the right travel agency.

Physical preparation for the Hajj is highly recommended. If you normally live a sedentary lifestyle but have saved for years to be able to go on the pilgrimage, you will not be able to keep up with what is often a grueling journey. Start early to get your body in shape for the trip. Join an exercise class, take part in regular physical exercise or hire a personal trainer who can customize a training program for your particular need.

The Saudi government has found it necessary to institute elaborate rules and regulations to ensure that that those attending the Hajj have a good experience and order is maintained. Take some time to read the rules and regulations and seek clarification if you are unsure. For example, don't plan to travel solo as visa are not given to those who do. Check the Saudi Embassy website for more information.

In addition to ensuring that you have sufficient funds to make the trip and cover expenses, you also need to concerned with health issues. You will be rubbing shoulders with millions in a place possibly far away from home. The required inoculations are critically important and some may even be mandatory. Check with your tour organization and your physician. And just in case the unthinkable happens - you get sick, you will have already made arrangements for medical coverage.

The Hajj is an obligation of Islam dating back to the Prophet Abraham. It brings millions of Muslims from all over the world to share this spiritual experience and fulfill the five pillars of Islam. This is a once in a lifetime obligation and careful and thoughtful travel preparation is essential to the satisfactory fulfillment of this obligation.
