Characteristics of Rhodesian Ridgebacks

The Rhodesian Ridgeback have very unique characteristics that enable it to do a very specific job. This dog was originally bred for hunting lions in Africa and thus, it couldn't just be "any old dog". That being the case, these dogs are obviously strong and seemingly fearless. Today, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is more common to see living with people as a family pet than it as a lion hunter, but they have retained the amazing qualities that were bred into them. They get their name from the ridge of fur on thier spines that is turned forward, rather than lying down flat and facing toward the back.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is extremely smart, fearless, and loyal. They may not be seen as one of the more social and friendly dogs, as they do not typically pay any mind to strangers that are not a threat to themselves or their owners. These dogs are not aggressive by nature, but are very protective of their families and can be trained to make excellent watchdogs. They are also fairly independent and can be quite stubborn. The inexperienced dog owner would be better off with a different breed as this dog will know right away if he or she can get away with taking on the "alpha" position in the family pack.

Training the Rhodesian Ridgeback should be started quite early in the dog's life. Training must be consistent, calm, and should not be heavy handed in the least. That will not be an effective method at all. These are very sensitive dogs with long memories and they will not take well to harsh training and discipline methods. These can easily crush the spirit of the dog and essentially ruin them for life.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are extremely affectionate and loving with their families. They will be very content to spend time with the owner and family that they love. They typically do well with children, as well as other animals. They should be socialized when they are young so that they don't become overly standoffish, shy, or suspicious of new situations or people.

A Rhodesian Ridgeback is very active, seeming to have a never ending supply of energy. This dog should be kept active and mentally stimulated to prevent boredom. A bored Ridgeback can become quite unmanageable and destructive. When indoors, the dog will be rather quiet and calm, but should be taken out for regular exercise and fun. They must be walked or jogged briskly every day and should be let off the leash for some uninhibited running on a regular basis, as well. They do best with a large, fenced yard if kept in town or on a farm ideally.

The life expectancy of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is between ten and twelve years, which is common (even a bit long) among the larger breeds of dogs. With proper care and relationship, these will be wonderful years for the two of you. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are very special dogs that can add a dimension of loyalty and love such as you rarely find, but they are not for everyone. They have characteristics that are unique to the lion hunters. Be sure that you have what it takes to give this breed a healthy and happy life before you acquire one, because they deserve no less.
