The top shoe trends this winter can be subdivided into two general categories - a return to comfort, roots and all things homely; and outrageous, killer, statement shoes. Wintry temperatures and wet conditions inevitably mean that flat, comfortable boots that keep feet both warm and dry will always be in demand, and the return of this perennial trend is no surprise. On the other end of the spectrum, sky-high shoes embellished with studs, beads, feathers and metal are fashion's reaction to the recent recession - if fashionistas can no longer afford an It bag, a pair of the latest out-of-this-world
Alexander McQueen's 12 inch futuristic shoes will do.
Androgynous
Led by the indomitable Alexa Chung, androgyny is back in a big way this winter. Mannish shoes with laces and heels were shown on Prada and Donna Karen catwalks this season. Brogues are a staple favourite of Sienna Miller, who wears them paired with opaque tights and floaty girlie dresses, highlighting the male/female contrast that is perfectly on trend for winter 2009.
Ankle boots The wear-it-with-everything shoe for winter 2009, ankle boots can be worn with jeans, dresses, skirts - you name it, someone's worn it with an ankle boot this season. In a nod to the new gothic and punk rock looks dominating the catwalks, winter 2009 ankle boots sport studs aplenty, tassels, feathers, metallic accents, cut outs, buckles or beads - the more embellishment the better. Wear with your little black dress and a accessorize with a clutch.
Over the knee boots
Over the knee boots require confidence and a gentle approach to coordinating an outfit around this key piece for winter 2009. Worn over tights or jeans (never bare flesh!) with a short woollen dress or tunic, over the knee boots are super sexy. Seen on models and celebrities alike, the on-trend material for these boots is suede, in camel, grey or black.
The biker boot
You've got the leather jacket, now complete your look with the biker boot. Flat boots with a raised heel, the new biker boots for winter 2009 are comfortable to wear. This season they come studded with metal and laces. Perfect with skinny jeans tucked in or a floaty dress, the biker boot is set to become a popular favourite this winter.
Platforms
Continuing on from summer's trends, platform shoes are a key trend for winter 2009. The style is now concealed platforms, the higher the better. Although these shoes may look high, the platform alleviates the height and many platform shoes are surprisingly comfortable. Choose over the top designs, gladiator-like straps, metal or buckle accents and metallic or glitter - perfect for partying the wintry nights away.
