Essays: Dreams & goals

Most people have dreams for the daytime, and for their life, but we all have dreams at night. It is said the sub-conscious works at our dreams and are irrational, that is why we dream such incoherent, often incomprehensible scenarios. But how many people actually remember their dreams when they wake up? How many remember long enough to write them down? How many understand their dreams and recognise some are predictive, of not only the next few days but the next few years!

I have had many dreams in my life which I have remembered, and some have been predictive, fantasy, meaningful, repetitive. I have found the dreams often have relevance to my future activities, and they can have an influence on what I try to achieve, as they may have already given me a direction to proceed in, an answer to a problem, or a means of putting me in a happier frame of mind when I wake up.

Ihave twice dreamt of Jesus, who was a being full of light with only an edging showing the shape of a human. At the time of the first dream I still considered Jesus to be a proper man, and I could not comprehend what was meant by a being of light. I also saw the Christ figure as a rough hewn wooden figure on a cross, which for some reason had life. As it had been given to me by the Clergy, I realised this was what was meatn by the dream, however, it took me nearly 20 years to fully understand its meaning.

There have also been other, even more dramatic predictive dreams: the Challenger disaster was one I was aware of three years before it happened.

Some dreams can be pure fantasy, and one I had was similar to the Alice in Wonderland story, although it related to seeking a rabbit, rather than following one, and I was Mrs Hunter, pretending to be someone else. The dream took two pages of writing to relate it, and this was a long vivid dream, even for me.

The way I feel upon waking is crucial as to what sort of day I will have, so it does affect my goals, as well as my aims (dreams) during the daytime.

Where would we be without dreams of all kinds. They are an essential part of life.
