One of the greatest trips a baseball fan can make is to Wrigley Field in Chicago. It is an absolute mecca of baseball and a true treasure of the game. Whether you are a die-hard Cubs fan or new to the game, the trip is well worth it.
The Wrigleyville area has more to offer than just the Cubs. This article will outline some of the things to do and sites to see when you are spending the day in and around Wrigley Field.
The best way to get to the stadium is to take the L train. Take the red line to the Addison stop; there you are right in the middle of the action. On any game day there will be thousands of fellow fans, mostly dressed in blue and waiting for the game, or making their way to the gates.
It is fun to see some of the legendary bars in the area also. Among the true institutions of the area are Murphy's Bleachers, Harry Caray's Tavern, The Cubbie Bear, and there is even a new bar called The Captain Morgan Club that is located right at the stadium.
Also outside the stadium don't be surprised to see the Cubs biggest fan, Ronnie Woo Woo. He will be recognizable as the only guy wearing a true Cubs uniform, right down to the stirrups.
Once inside the stadium, be ready to be amazed. It is so beautiful. Be sure to check out the old-time, hand-operated scoreboard; the National League scores are on the left and the American League scores on the right.
The ivy-covered outfield wall is exactly as it has been for the past 70 years. You will see the retired number flags blowing in the wind on the foul poles. Once the game starts, you will have to try a Wrigley field hot dog or Italian Beef Sandwich along with an ice cold old-style, Chicago's favorite beer. There are lots of good options to choose from.
The 7th-inning stretch is another tradition. This involves singing "Take me Out to the Ball Game", started by long time announcer Harry Caray. Now the Cubs enlist different celebrities to do the honors. Some have been good and others have been downright embarrassing and made the blooper reels for years to come, so you never know what you will see during the 7th inning.
You will never regret making a trip to Wrigley Field. Whether the Cubs win or lose, it truly is one of the best baseball experiences in America. If you live in Chicago there isn't any reason why you can't take in a game. If you don't live in Chicago, make plans to visit! It's a beautiful city with so much to offer.
