Death and Beyond

I just don't know what to make of death.
I must admit.
A wonder I can't shake.
Does anyone really know?

There are those that swear and say
That they know where they will go.
While I wonder, do I pray
What will happen when it ends?

If we could have a choice in this matter
That would be beautiful.
I want to live forever, or be myself forever
Only better, can that be arranged?

What if we go as some say to a heavenly place
Somewhere in the stars, floating in mid air
In some heavenly house with gold perchance
But what do we do then?

That thought is a little nebulous,
This place called heaven, I just don't know
I am not familiar with this concept
What else do we know but life on Earth?

I know, I know, I understand the problem.
Lost loved ones we want to see again
Children we have adored, whose death
Has taken our heart and left us empty, aching.

Just today a father I know
Got a call, a terrible call
Your daughter, on the playground, threw up
Then started seizing, continued seizing, they tried, so sorry...

She has left this world,
Precious little soul,
He loved her so much,
She must be, has to be, still alive somewhere...

Who wants to think that death is just the end?
You quit breathing, your heart stops.
Darkness comes, thoughts cease,
Then nothingness begins?

That just can't be,
What an awful thought,
Somehow life must continue,
Life must surely live again.

But what if it is true?
That we have no recollection,
No continuity,
One minute your human, the next...

What if you wake,
Sentience sustained,
But another one of God's creations,
Who are we to choose?

If God is revered, his Creation so grand,
Why can't we believe,
Find a way to feel true comfort,
That all that he has created is good?

All living things breath, enjoy,
They all have their purpose,
All reproduce, all find a reason,
To live and to remain alive.

That is the problem isn't it?
Secretly we are disgusted.
Some of God's creations are just, well,
Surely I could never be that-are you kidding?

But down the road,
Sooner or later,
What if we were human again,
But this time different, maybe this time better.

It's not such a terrible thought.
To be young again,
Have some spunk, feel some wonder,
It might just be incredible.

Some are right.
We do want to hang on.
We want to live and die on our own terms,
Reassurance so that we can find peace.

But you know, life is a gift.
And what do we know?
That life comes to an end and begins again,
Life does go on.

I really do like knowing me, being me.
I know I want to live forever, don't we all?
But sometimes I really do want to be someone else,
Maybe I'll actually have the chance.

Death is scary,
I admit it, it can't be denied.
But there is something sweet in new life,
And some misery in old age.

It is coming, one day will be here.
Sooner for some than they thought

But there is hope for that little girl,
I swear it, I pray it, I'm so sorry.

Death and Beyond.
