Short stories: A Thanksgiving romance

by Mark Hurley

Created on: November 14, 2009

Jimmy knew that Susan would be so surprised tomorrow, at the thanksgiving meal, with all her family around the table; he was going to propose to her, finally. They had been high school sweethearts and both were in their last year of college. He knew that Susan would say yes and that she would set the date for after graduation in may. Jimmy had just picked up the ring at the jewelers and could not keep it in his pocket, he kept getting it out, daydreaming, and thinking about the look on Susan's face when he pulled it out of his pocket tomorrow at dinner.

He still had to stop at the grocery store for Susan though, she always made that cranberry and orange stuff. He didn't know what it was called, but, he liked it and so did everyone else in her family. Putting the ring back in his pocket he pulled in and parked his pick up almost in front of the grocery, that was unusual, on the day before thanksgiving, most of the time, people were packed in getting last minute items as he was today. His enthusiasm was self-evident as he skipped his way through the door, made a hard right, and went straight to the produce isle. Jimmy saw one of his college buddies going down the produce cases just shaking his head as he walked. "Hey, Ted," Jimmy shouted. Ted turned and shook his head and laughed at Jimmy, he knew why he was so happy, Ted had a crush on Susan back in high school and Jimmy had won her over with his charm and ability to have a good time. He was voted most likable in their senior year.

Oh well, Ted thought, I have a beautiful wife and three year old son to be thankful for, he was happy in his life. "So, when are you going to pop the question?" Ted asked, "tonight, or will you wait until dinner tomorrow, you always were one to make a show of things," he said, as he grinned that big smile of his. "Gotta stick to the plan," Jimmy replied. "You know me, if I don't something will go wrong," he said, smiling back. "You are a lucky guy, Jimmy, I know you love her and will take care of her, you have my best wishes," he said, with a pat on Jimmy's back.

Back in the truck, Jimmy reached in his pocket for the ring, I am a lucky guy, he thought, as he reached deeper and deeper and felt nothing there. Slamming on the brakes, he screeched to a halt and turned back around, it has got to be back at the store, jimmy thought. He didn't want a speeding ticket on Thanksgiving eve,but he kept it five miles over the limit, he had to find that ring. About a half mile from the store, he
