The use of resources for comfort or vanity has been a staple of existence since the dawn of time. There is no question of morals in the use of fur. I suppose that prior to the advent of cloth and textiles there was a civilization of people that were immoral. I must admit that the mere discussion of this question is an indication of how ridiculous we have become when it comes to the sensitivities of animals.
Where is the outcry on behalf of the chicken, cow, lamb, rabbit, buffalo and the list goes on. These are resources that are used to make our lives more comfortable and enjoyable. Our society is one of consumption. The population requires to be clothed and fed. At a certain status level, those that can afford to give themselves a luxury such as a fur coat should have that right and not be intimidated by those who may disagree with that practice.
There should be a sensibility to the manner in which the fur is obtained. If the animal is to be used for the purpose of food or clothing then the noble beast should be dispatched in a quick and merciful manner. This shows respect to the animal and gives a greater worth to the resource that is being used. Sometimes the vigor that is brought to this issue should be redirected to the plight of the homeless, abused, disenfranchised and the poor.
If one tenth of the effort that is given to non-issues that do not affect the population at large were focused on challenges that our fellow human beings face, the world just might be a better place. Animals that are raised as a resource to fill a need for the human race should not be put on a pedestal above the human species. There is a misconception of how to treat Fido and how a farm raised or range free resource should be treated. These are two completely different scenarios.
Fido is fed and nurtured to be a companion, protector and friend whose love is unconditional. Fido may be trained to help the blind or comfort the sick and these are honorable tasks performed in the service of the hand that feeds the domesticated animal. The animal that has been raised to be used as a resource is raised for that purpose and that purpose only. Those animals should be euthanized as quickly and mercifully as possible. What is immoral is not tackling the more pressing issues of the day.
