Shameless self-promotion: Internet marketing

by Jessica Hughey

Created on: November 13, 2009

Is a lack of self-confidence preventing you from going all-out to promote yourself or your website, online? Opportunities abound for unique promotional opportunities, if you know where to look. Many sites hunger for content and will accept articles submitted by outside authors for publication within their pages. This can be one of the most effective and interesting ways to promote your website.

Pick a topic that is closely related to your online business endeavor. This will provide the opportunity to mention your business name and include a URL in your article. Do you have a unique business enterprise? Perhaps you are younger or older than the average online marketer. This could be the basis of a personal experience article. Are you a female in a traditionally male oriented field, or vice-versa? Write about the obstacles you were able to overcome in order to reach your goals.

The next step is to target your market by choosing the appropriate sites to which to submit your article. Decide who your main audience should be and submit to sites which would attract those surfers. Above all, don't be afraid to submit your articles to the larger sites and online newsletters. You may not think your article worthy of these publications; however, the publisher may have an entirely different opinion, particularly if your topic is an especially timely one.

Additionally, be sure to include an author's box at the end of each and every article, and require anyone who publishes your articles to include this information. The box should include your name, your email address, copyright and reprint information, and a link to your site. Your articles may be syndicated to many different websites and/or newsletters and this box must be included, so that you can reap the full benefits of your online marketing efforts.

You must also prepare yourself for the possibility of rejection. That is one of the pitfalls of this type of promotion. However, you should not get discouraged. The publisher who rejected your article may simply not be in the market for the type of content you've submitted, at this time. Simply keep submitting your articles and don't let rejection get you down. Persistence is the key.

Writing and publishing articles is a wonderful way to get your name "out there" and to establish yourself as an "expert" in your particular niche. Make sure the articles are timely, informative and useful and you may just find yourself with more traffic to your site than you ever thought possible.
