How to take care of outdoor pets during winter

Pets are a member of the family no matter if they reside outside or inside. It is important that we take special care during the winter months so our pets stay healthy. Outdoor pets require some special considerations.

1. Shelter
Make sure the animal has warm, clean shelter. Bedding should be washed and dried often. Just like we would not be happy sleeping in a wet bed, neither are our pets. As snow melts it creates water and so bedding should be changed as least once a day to be clean and dry.

The house or shelter should be insulated. While animals adapt and have a heavier fur in the winter, nothing can prevent the bite if wind except good shelter.

If the weather gets too cold, bring them in the house. Generally, those who live where winter is severe will hear warnings on the radio to remind us when animals need additional help and shelter.

2. Food
You've just stepped in from a frosty walk and a nice bowl of stew sure sounds good. Your pet probably has a similar reaction in the winter time. So mix up the diet a bit with some things that can be warmed. Slip a little healthy gravy over the dry food. Try some canned food at a warm temperature.

Remember that animals are using more energy to create heat and they need more food in the winter months. Make sure to increase the amount to adjust.

Don't let the water dish freeze. Or put out several dishes at different times of day. It is all too easy for us to forget in a nice warm house that there may be a frozen dish. Set a timer.

3. Health
A good check up before the cold weather sets in is essential. Our veterinarian is not just an emergency employee. Our animals need regular check ups and the vet may have important information to help the animal stay healthy during the winter months. At the first sign in illness check with the vet. Winter time is a tough time for an outdoor animal to heal.

4. Exercise
Most animals don't get the needed exercise by themselves. It is pretty hard to chase a ball if there is no one outside to toss it. There aren't as many birds to chase or reason to romp. So go exercise with your outdoor animal every day. Even a cat will venture out do see what is happening.

5. Affection
It is about taking the time to brush the snow off, play the game, and talk with the animal. Like people, many outdoor pets suffer depression during the winter months . Fight it off for both pet and owner by spending extra time together and sharing some affection.
