Outdoor activities in winter: How to stay warm and safe

Winter time is meant to enjoyed, just like all seasons, it has its charm. It is essential to pay attention to the basics and make sure the activities that happen include both warm and safe individuals. There are some common sense guide lines to help us make sure that happens. It may seem like pointing out the obvious, but these are good reminders.

~ Limit the amount of exposure time

Staying out in the elements too long can lead to serious problems like hypothermia and frostbite. Set a timer if that is needed to remember to go in before anyone gets too cold or worse too wet. A number of small excursions outside are better than one long one.

~ Sunshine still burns
Ask anyone who forgot to wear sunscreen skiing on an sunny day and the bet is they will never forget again. The rays reflect off the snow and cause glare and burning. Protective glasses or goggle, sun screen and lip balm are just another part of getting ready to go outdoors in the cold.

~ Dress like an onion
Take a look at an onion. Onions have layers that can easily be peeled off. Think onion, with light layers of clothing that can be removed if it gets wet. Just like the onion has an outer skin, we need the top layer to be protective. It should be resistant to wind and act as a break. It should also have some sort of water proofing applied. Nothing stays completely dry, but spend the time and money to select the right clothing.

~ Ice is slippery
Ice is not always easy to spot and it is hard to walk on. Choose a shoe with tread and pay close attention to the surroundings. Just like drivers of cars don't see black ice, we don't see it when crossing the street. Watch for warnings.

~ Hats on, no exceptions
Think the hat looks silly, wonderful. Wear it anyway. Heat escapes through the top of the head. A hat lets it leave a little slower keeping the whole body a little warmer.

~ Mittens may look juvenile
And wear them with pride. They are warmer than gloves. Bring an extra pair of gloves in case you need dexterity. The first choice for warmth and safety should always be mittens.

~ Food and water is fuel
Just like building a fire requires wood our bodies need food and water to keep warm. Take plenty of water and healthy snacks to help the body fight the cold. Drink, even if you are not thirsty.

~ Know what to look for
The two most common medical emergencies that are associated with cold weather are hypothermia and frostbite. It doesn't require that you be on a high mountain in severe weather to get either. Make sure everyone in the party knows what to look for and first aide for these issues.

~ Have fun
There are 100's of things that happen in winter. Get out somewhere and celebrate the season. If sunny Florida is home take a trip. Enjoy the joys of snow, ice, and wind.
