The labradoodle origin began in Australia for the purpose to assist blind people with allergies who wanted a guide dog in 1989. In Australia many breeds were used and a breed standard was set. Since then with such varied results the hybrid lives on. The hypoallergenic coat, believed temperament, tenacious breeders, and adorable name have won out over an alternate choice. Consistency in breed standard has not been accomplished in the USA.
Variation in size from approximately 30lbs. up to 100lbs. is a combination of several factors. One factor is the size of poodle used, either toy, miniature or standard. There are a plethora of colors: chocolate, cafe, parchment, cream, gold, apricot, red, black, silver, chalk, and parti colors. The coat also varies from wooly to fleece and can be straight, wavy, or curly.
Temperament also varies and can be conflicting. Testing a dog's temperament should be done on an individual basis. Most people rely heavily on the intelligence of both breeds to dominate any contradictions in temperament or behavior. Both breeds thrive if they have been selected for a purpose such as, obedience agility, sport/hunting training, or become therapy dogs. If the purpose is just for companionship then vigorous exercise is required.
There are health problems that can be minimized by health screening and conscientious breeding. Addison's disease is common in poodles and mixes of poodles but can be treated effectively where quality of life is still good. Dogs with this disease should not be bred and well documented to prevent the spread of the disease.
A hypoallergenic coat is not always a guarantee and neither is no shedding. Anyone with allergic reactions to dogs could have this reaction due to dander or saliva. Discussing your allergy with your Dr. for a prescription is more of a guarantee than relying on a hypoallergenic coat for successful dog ownership.
An alternative for these desired traits is a Portuguese water dog. This dog is also good as a therapy dog. When selecting a new dog to become a member of your family it is a good idea to be sure what role the new member is going to play. There is also always the option of adopting from your local humane society. They can provide ample amounts of information on the dogs they have available. Do not buy and report suspected puppy mills. Is the name of this hybrid more popular than the actual dog?
