I have always thought throughout my life that eating healthy meant eating food that wasn't delicious. After all, most of what I craved was either fattening or had no nutritional value for me. So when I heard that Lean Pockets came out with a spinach, artichoke, and chicken version of their product, I was excited. I thought that this would be a good way to start eating somewhat healthy without sacrificing flavor.
I was wrong. I have always had problems with Hot Pockets, so I did not think I would fare any better with Lean Pockets. Whenever I heat up these products, I end up making the crust too hot and the middle is still very cold; or vice versa. It seemed that I could not find a happy medium, and I was stuck scalding my tongue with a really, really hot Hot Pocket.
Needless to say, Hot Pockets' formula did not change with the creation of the Lean Pockets. I still get cold centers and red hot crusts, and I'm still wondering why I get hungry just one hour after having finished one. The spinach, artichoke, and chicken version was no better. I was thinking of great Mediterranean flavors that were kind of sweet yet really savory. I love that combination, and I have always been a big fan of spinach, artichokes, and chicken.
Unfortunately, I could barely taste the spinach. It seemed to be existent only when I took apart the middle of the Lean Pocket, and I would casually say, "Oh, there's one!" It was like an afterthought. And, it left my mouth and my mind wondering why they would even bother to call this "spinach, artichoke, and chicken" when there was barely any spinach.
There are plenty of artichokes in each Lean Pocket, but I think that they are so covered with the gravy that I can't really taste the artichoke flavor. I am a big fan of artichokes, and I was again left wondering why they would label artichokes as an ingredient when I can't even taste it.
Last but not least, the chicken was palpable and it was there. In other words, there was a lot of chicken in each Lean Pocket, but the chicken flavor was overwhelming all others.
At any rate, even if I were really hungry and all I had was a Lean Pocket with artichokes, spinach, and chicken, I would probably choose hunger instead. If I were starving, it would be a different story.
