If you're like most parents, Thanksgiving can be a hectic stressful time for you. Trying to juggle cooking, in-laws, decorating, and clean up can be tasking. Especially when the kids are running around wild in all the excitement. Here's a few ways to make sure the children are entertained so everyone can have an enjoyable day of thanks.
Get them involved! Children love to help mommy (or daddy) in the kitchen. Why not let them prepare a salad? You'll need a large bowl, tongs, bag of greens, baby carrots, and pre-measured dressing. Applaud efforts! They can also set the silver wear place settings, help replenish hor duerves and snacks or go around to collect empty bowls and cups.
Another great way to keep the children entertained is to have them photo document the day. Give them a Polaroid camera to photograph all the family and friends they probably don't get to see often and all the delicious holiday foods too. You can sit down before hand and make special frames or purchase inexpensive photo books at the dollar store so everyone can leave with a special gift from your little one(s).
How about a nature walk to burn off some holiday pounds. Children love to be outside, the cool weather and turning leaves are perfect for grown ups to socialize and children to burn off some extra energy.
Crafts are always a hit. For cute pine cone turkeys collect pine cones and gather glue, googly eyes, and construction paper in fall colors. Precut beaks and wings and let the children be creative with their projects. Watch them get creative and show off their creations. Remember that the older children can help the younger and assist with any clean up.
Make the day special by starting a family tradition. Visit your local library, book swap, or go online for some Thanksgiving themed stories a few days before hand. On the big day gather the children (and adults) and have grandpa read a touching Thanksgiving book or Bible story. Take turns sharing what everyone is thankful for this holiday season.
Remember this turkey day is a time to be with our loved ones and making special memories together. Doing some simple activities with the children is a fun way to make sure the day goes smoothly and as stress free as possible. Make special moments and maybe even start some new family traditions!
