Ways to improve emotional balance in your life

by Karon Brandt

Balance. Centered-ness. Wholeness. Feeling complete.

We all want to feel good, healthy, and fit. But balance is like another dimension of life. It is about positive emotions, feelings of wellness, and perhaps what we refer to as the human soul or life force.

Emotional health can create energy, motivation, a zest for living, a positive attitude, and perhaps that quiet inner feeling of love for all things, including the Self. We know when we get in touch with that part of ourselves, but we don't always know how to nourish it, care for it, and make it blossom.

Some people believe in the power of prayer - communication with a higher source of power "outside" of themselves. If that works for you, that's fine. Some people call this energy source "God," but if you turn over your power to an outside source, you will lose something of yourself, not gain it. Real power is within.

If you've ever been "touched" by the awesome power of Nature in all her glory, you have probably made contact with your inner being. It is the spark of Life; a knowing that there is something greater than what we see with our eyes; a knowing that there is something more than we can see of our physical beings.

If you've ever loved someone even more than life itself, you know the all-encompassing power of Love that fills the soul to overflowing with a sense of wonderment.

If you meditate on a regular basis and have allowed your higher self to come forth; again, you've known moments of wholeness, wellness, and overall well-being.

If you compare those moments of contact with a higher self-conscious-ness, you may recognize them as the life force of "God" within; that is the essence of God referred to in the Bible as, "We are made in the image of God." We have that power, that energy, that life force that lives beyond the death of the earthly body. In fact, that force extends outside the body and those who are psychic can see the energy fields called auras. That energy can also be photographed with special cameras.

This is not meant to be a religious exercise or experience. I am using words that we all "know" in some personal sense, but we find language inadequate to express these peak moments of "enlightenment" when they occur.

The soul, the human spirit, higher consciousness, the inner being, are all that aspect of the self that we identify with "wholeness" and a feeling of oneness with "all that is," when we tap into those moments.

How do we expand those moments into daily life? Through meditation (simply "being" and not "doing"), through "prayer" (gratitude; focusing attention away from the self) to connect with the source of life, and by remembering those higher moments and encouraging their expression.

Some people find the greatest happiness in the laughter of children, or the awesomeness of Nature, in the unselfish acts of others, in the act of self-forgiveness and letting go of past mistakes, in visualizing a positive outcome for oneself and others, and by giving of oneself to others in acts of generosity. Love, altruism, and revelations of the inter-connectedness of all things can offer moments of "wholeness." One has a sense of well-being, contentment and joy.

"Balance" is our natural state of being; it is because of stress, negative thoughts and lack of self care that we get out of balance and let things go. Take time for the self; re-center your thoughts; balance your life by taking time to feed the soul.

That's how you regain balance in life.
