iPhone app reviews: Underwater The Game

I love playing Bejeweled and I still love playing the classic game of Tetris. So, when I heard about Underwater The Game, I became really interested in it. I have played other apps with the same premise, but because I love comparing apps, I decided to spring for Underwater The Game anyway.

Firstly, the graphics are just right for a game of this price. I actually expected the graphics to be much worse, since the game only costs $1.99. But, I have learned to become more open-minded about inexpensive games. After all, I have found plenty of games under $5, and even free, that have delivered more (in terms of graphics and gameplay) than games with higher price tags. With that said, the graphics do not have any glitches and I think that the images "flow" together smoothly.

Secondly, the gameplay is pretty addicting. I admit that there are times where I wish the game would be a bit faster, but I think that the smoothness of the gameplay adds to the playability experience. In other words, because there is very little lag time between images, my experience playing the game is enhanced. Music and backgrounds are also engaging. The music fits in very well with the type of game you are playing.

However, I do have a few suggestions to make which, I think, would greatly enhance my experience overall.

First, I would like the controls to be situated a bit better. For people who have larger finger pads, the small controls at the very bottom of the screen can be problematic. Perhaps that is one of the biggest pitfalls of creating an app such as this and utilizing the touchscreen abilities of the iPhone at the same time.

And, I also think that there should be more ways to eliminate jellyfish. For instance, there could be some type of "special jellyfish" that will somehow remove more jellyfish than usual. In addition, the background could be a bit better; perhaps adding seaweed or making the background a bit brighter would help. For now, the "water effects" do not really make me feel like I'm underwater. Lastly, the transitions between levels could be a bit cleaner. Perhaps a transitionary image that says, "Level beat!" or something to that extent would help.

All in all, I recommend Underwater The Game if you have a couple of dollars, and a few minutes, to spare.
