How to deal with being stripped of authority at work

by Cody Hodge

Created on: November 12, 2009

What happens when you come into work, and you find out that you don't have the same powers as you used to have? I am not talking about super powers, but power that you used to have at work. You might notice it when you come into work and your override number doesn't work, and you aren't able to get into the building on off hours. Maybe you see your name crossed off the schedule, or maybe you come into work and see someone else you haven't seen before.

What goes through your head when you suddenly realize that something fishy is going on? The first thing to do is to confirm that you have been replaced, or are going to be replaced. Once you confirm that, you have some options. The best idea might simply be to go be by yourself for a few minutes, and get your head back on straight. Process your initial emotions, and then just go on with the day.

There is nothing you can do for the day, so you might as well just do the best that you can. The first instinct might be to just quit, but can you really afford to? Most people might get stripped of authority, but it doesn't mean they lose the paycheck that comes with the job. Most companies won't reduce your pay unless they negotiate that with you in advance. If you still have a job, just realize you are the highest paid at your position most likely.

Figure out who is still on your side at the office. Some people might still respect you, and look up to you as a leader. They might still long for the days where you were in charge, and not whoever was brought in to replace you. If you can rally the troops in the office, it might be enough to either get your job back, or put some political pressure on whoever made the call to strip you of your authority, and make them look bad too.

Just be patient. As long as the money is still good, you should wait out the current regime. Wait until a new boss comes in, and restores you to your current position. It isn't impossible, and it could happen if you got stripped of your authority for something dumb like being late once, or something like that.

If you ever have to deal with being stripped of authority, I feel bad for you, and it definitely is not fun. However, there isn't much you can do besides just quit, and that might not be the best idea. If the boss made a mistake, the boss will be punished for it, and so it won't go unnoticed. Just keep working hard, and you will get that authority back sooner rather than later.
