Poetry: Animal poems for children

I saw the Woodchuck chuck It didn't cluck or pluck,

It didn't waddle or chuckle,

But it was quick with a scurry and a duck,

I saw the Woodchuck chuck a twig,

Which lands on the bonker of the squat badger,

A playful yet pugnacious badger wore a twig for a wig,

The marmot ducks to the bosom of a rock for mercy,

Grizzled is she that whistling marmot,

The Woodchuck playfully taps the one who'd come to rumble,

The badger never far from the thought of a chase, squeezed the marmot fondly,

"Nice rolls of fat, wonderful, delightful, and possibly delicious",

The Woodchuck chucks the flower tops into a spittle,

"Let us be friends. Friends who look out for each other" said she,

The badger gave a snivel, a chink of an eye, and replied,

"Dear friend, you shall be sweet to the end, always sweet to the end",

Down the dale, the two friends see a Coyote scurry about,

The Coyote lifts his nose and fixes his eyes on the marmot,

The marmot dashes to the den and whispers,

"Come to the shelter of my den, let no good befall us dear friend",

The Coyote charges and the badger backs into the den,

A dash, a strike, the badger has no back, no chink, no underbelly,

"Won't you give up that sweet round morsel" said the over grown jackle, "and surely I will leave you a morsal of gristle",

The badger looks up, ear tucked away and bared rack of white teeth,

The badger has the strike of a viper and the Coyote takes on the wistful mantel of the outwitted,

The Woodchuck with the courage of the den, shouts "savage eater, be cursed to follow your nose and wonder",

The Coyote sniffs the ground, walks, and trots to the hill out yonder,

The badger slyly hugs the ground and swaggers,

"Who'd dare mess with my strike, my sharp claws, the teeth of my jaw, and the crinkle of my nose",

The marmot boasts, "My friends, I give them my best shelter. My brave and loyal friend."
