Poetry: Let me go

Let me Go

Her room was on the second floor
he painfully climbed the stairs.
With heavy heart, his mind was numb
with daily burdened cares.

ICU is a lonely place
smiles are never shared.
Tears are all too common there
and everyone looks scared.

She'd been there for several weeks
perhaps she's slipping away.
He tried so hard to convince himself
that God would let her stay.

Her sparkling eyes opened wide
and without uttering a sound,
she watched him enter in her room
and excitedly look around.

For a glowing radiance around them cast
a peace they had never known,
as a smile came to her lovely lips
he could sense they weren't alone.

Her arms reached out to hold him close
he sat on her bed real slow.
She looked at him and with her eyes
said, Darling, please let me go.

He slowly nodded, It's OK
then gently kissed her hands.
Neither spoke a single word,
tears wet their wedding bands.

The room grew dim and she was gone
his eyes welled up with tears.
It hurt so bad to let her go
after only fifty years.
