The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics is going to be a great event with hundreds of thousands of people. Navigating your way through the masses may be difficult and confusing. Here are the venues you will be looking for, what events are being held there and how many people each venue can hold.
BC Place Stadium is the venue for Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as for the nightly Victory Ceremonies during the 2010 Winter Olympics. It seats 55,000 people.
Canada Hockey Place will hold 19,300 people during each hockey match.
Cypress Mountain will be the venue for Freestyle skiing, Snowboarding and for the Snowboarding halfpipe events. For both freestyle and for traditional snowboarding the capacity is 12,000, however, for the halfpipe competition only 8,000 spectators will be able to view live. Cypress Mountain is in Cypress Provincial Park.
Main Media Centre is in the Canada Place complex and the Vancouver Convention Centre. These areas will be for media outlets of around 7,000 accredited broadcasters and techs for both television and radio stations.
The Richmond Olympic Oval will be the location for the 400-metre speed skating track. Also located in the Richmond Olympic Oval will be the "anti-doping lab," sports medicine and wellness services, retail and food services. This venue seats over 7,000 spectators.
The Pacific Coliseum will be the venue for both the short track speed skating and figure skating. The capacity of the coliseum is 14,200.
UBC Thunderbird Arena can hold up to 6,800 visitors and will house hockey matches.
Vancouver Olympic Village will be the housing for the athletes and teams competing in the Olympics. These apartment building will be holding 2,730 people.
Whistler Creekside will be the location for the Skiing events including Ladies downhill and both men's and women's Hot Air jump. The capacity for this venue is 7,700.
The Whistler Olympic Park will hold 12,000 people per event. The competitions you will see there will be the biathlon, nordic combined, ski jumping and the cross-country skiing for a total of 28 events.
The Whistler Olympic Village is another housing area for the Olympic games. This area includes apartments, hotels and townhouses holding 2,850 people. It is located 20 minutes from the Whistler competitions.
The Whistler Sliding Centre will be the venue for the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton competitions. The capacity of this venue is 12,000 people per event.
With limited tickets to each event be sure to purchase your tickets as soon as possible and be sure to pick up a map if available. Enjoy the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
