Winter fashion: Women's clothing trends for moms

It is often hard to feel fashionable in winter. The bulky coats, the toque head and the sloppy Sorels can ruin practically any ensemble. Add a snuffling child into the mix and quite possibly you'll be that mother at the company Christmas party with undetected snot smears at the back of your dress. As you read this you may be thinking to yourself that you would rather be comfortable than chic and heavens to Betsy you're right. It's lucky for you that this winter's fashion trends make it possible for mothers to be both.

First things first, although you have entered into motherhood it is not necessary to make a transformation from sultry to maidenly. The most one should do is tone down exposed flesh, but this applies to every female out there not just the moms. Men will attest that there is nothing more enticing than hidden sex appeal.

Stylish and cozy can be easily attained with scarves. Thus, your wardrobe can never have too many. Crocheted shawls can be draped around your dcolletage for a mummy look that is oh so yummy. Plaid, checks or print scarves can add colour to drab attire and metallic knits will add sparkle without the investment. Whatever look you desire whether it be bohemian or upscale, they both can achieved it with a scarf. Get creative with the way you drape it. Fold it into a triangle and tie it around the nape of your neck, loop it around and tuck the ends in, or wear it like a hood and wrap it loosely around you neck.

Now this season is truly all about boots but not those big white boots your husband wears to tromp around the bush. Little anklet cowboy boots are great for casual footwear. Prairie Boots which come in hoards of colours and are knit boots with button accents are perfect for errands when you're not up to leaving the house; they feel like slippers but they are grand enough to step outside in. Slouchy knee high boots are a hot commodity this winter and worth the savings. All of these boots can be worn with everything from skinny jeans to skirts. But remember with any boot or bootie you choose just make sure to winterize them. Salt stains are not pretty on suede.

As for jackets, ladies let's have fun. This season designers are mad about plaid which means there are lots of styles and colours to be had. Ultra high collar coats are also in. Not only are they fashionable but they are also very functional as they will protect your chin, cheeks, nose and lips from not so lovely chapped skin. Pick from an assortment of stylish neutral trench coats or opt for a short black coat. Mamma can wear whatever she wants this year as all the colours are out. There are little red riding hood petticoats, long military green coats and double breasted purple coats. You can go for pleats or a skirted like the trench from amiclubwear.com or you can go for a ruffle butt like the Bustle Back Trench from ASOS. Faux leather coats are also in and are a fraction of the cost from the real deal.

Winter is all about layering and staying warm. There is no need to be uncomfortable this year. So unless you love heels stick to the flat foot boots, bundle up with a scarf and make sure to buy up any coat that allows you room to move. A comfortable, confident mummy will look terribly good despite of the flurries. Whether it be ice or head cold you will be looking fabulous.
