Take a child who doesn't read and turning them into a kindergarten level reader takes lots of patience. I am a home schooling mom and have taught my daughter to read using phonics. It seemed to be the best because you use rhyming words rather than random words. Help your child learn to read words before they pick up their first book so it will be easier for them. The easier it is for them in the beginning the more they will enjoy it. Little kids love to play so keep their interest with fun games. The more it seems like playing the more they will want to do it.
First of all, before a child learns to read they must learn the letters and sounds of their alphabet. They also should be able to recognize their upper and lower case letters. It's ok if they're not perfect at it though it, will improve. The better they know the alphabet and its sounds the better they will be able to read.
Spend a little extra time on the vowels A, E, I, O, and U because they will use them quite often.
Write the lower case letters of the alphabet on index cards with a marker or a pen. Use one letter per card and store in a zip lock baggy. Lay out three letter words using the alphabet cards you made and have your kids sound them out one letter at a time. It's OK if they can't read the words this just gets them going in the right direction. My daughter was able to sound out the letters but it took her a while to figure out how to form words. After they try a few times slowly sound it out for them and see if they can figure it out then.
Give your kids three letter words to spell. For example give them the letters C, A, and T mixed up. Tell them to sound them out and place them in the write order to spell cat. As they do this help them by slowly sounding out the word for them until they get better at it.
Write the following word endings on individual index cards at, an, ag, ap, ad, ig, id, it, in, ip, ox, op, og, ug, up, ut, ed, et, eg, en, ell, and put in another zip lock bag.
Take the index cards with the at on it. Have them sound it out. It's ok to help them. Have them practice reading it over and over again.
Then take all the letters that make words with at for example c to make cat and b to make bat and so on. Continue doing this over and over again.
Take a zip lock bag and write learned or put a sticker on it to put all the word endings in it as your child learns them to use as review. Continue learning all the word endings in order using the method from above. Keep putting the word endings in the learned bag and review them every time your kid is ready for the next word ending. I recommend teaching the word endings with all the same vowels together.
While teaching your kids the word endings with the a vowel also teach them the following helper words these are words that are in small children's books known as high frequency words. They are as follows, I, a, and, the, on, and is. Also teach them about s and the end of words meaning more than one.
As kids learn new words make up little sentences with words they know and have your kids read and draw pictures to go with them for extra un. Find easy books to read to them and when you come to words they know have them read them.
After they start learning to read a little more you can introduce more Dolch sight words. Print off a list of them from the Internet
