Doing a piercing yourself can have severe consequences. Depending on where someone is trying to do the piercing, they will risk damaging nerves. Not to mention without a clean or proper needle you could end up with a bad infection, or possibly even your skin rejecting the piercing. None of these are worth it, spend the extra money to do it right. Any of these can also be caused by inexpierenced piercers, so getting references from pierced friends is always a good idea.
Nerve damage is a big one, there are plenty of stories about people damaging nerves to the point they can not control a part of their face. Do not take these stories lightly. If you like the ability to use your facial muscles, don't take the chance. Your face has several nerve points, and if someone were to poke a hole into one, damaging it for the sake of a piercing... it'd be a very disappointing experience.
Having a piercing reject is very painful. If you have ever seen pictures this can be pretty disturbing. There is also damage that will be caused to the skin tissue. This process is not quick, and it will have to be removed.. which is something no one wants to go through. Having this happen will end up with a lot of after care. It will have to be cleaned religiously to keep all infections out. Having a piercing reject can happen by simply using the wrong kind of needle, or perhaps not enough skin was pierced through... or maybe even the piercing wasn't placed in the right spot.
Infection can be caused by just not cleaning your piercing right. This is likely to happen when someone is piercing themselves. This can be caused by not using the right needle, not sterilizing the needle or the skin you are piercing, not cleaning your piercing enough or cleaning it with the right care. Whenever you get a professional piercing, they will tell you what to do to keep your piercing from getting infected. They will recommend cleaning it every time you are in the shower with a gentle soap, tell you not to pick at it or even really play with it for the first couple of weeks. Depending on the type of piercing being done, they will give extra instruction.
Doing your own piercing is never a good idea, it's always worth it to go in and pay for getting a piercing done right. When you get pierced professionally there is a higher chance of the piercing turning out right, don't make a hassle out of doing it yourself for an infection, and eventually just having to remove it. It really is just a pain.
