"Dichotomancy" is a blue sorcery spell printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Planar Chaos." So far, it is a rather interesting spell that one can use to really mess up an opponent's momentum. Currently, it is no longer legal in the standard format. But, it is still good in an extended format. In certain formats such as Singleton and EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander), this spell is not so great. Still, this is an all right spell to use in a control deck that uses blue cards.
The converted mana cost for Dichotomancy is nine. You are going to need two blue mana and seven colorless mana. So far, one may not want to pay the full mana cost. The thing about Dichotomancy is that it is rather expensive for the most part. However, there is a lower alternative cost of two blue mana and one colorless mana. Doing this gives Dichotomancy Suspend 3. It means that Dichotomancy is Exiled from the game for three turns and has three time counters on it. At the start of your upkeep, you remove a time counter from Dichotomancy. When all three time counters are removed, you get to play the spell and not have to pay the mana cost. Keep in mind that this is a sorcery spell and you can only play this during your turn.
What does Dichotomancy do in the first place?
By playing Dichotomancy, you search a target opponent's library for each nonland permanent that has the same names as those that are on the battlefield. If you do find some, you get to put those permanents under your control. You can find creatures, artifacts, and enchantments. Unfortunately, planeswalkers do not need to be tapped. For the other nonland permanents, you get to bring them under your control.
In this respect, it is similar to "Bribery" and "Blatant Thievery." By paying the alternative suspend cost, all you have to do is wait three turns. This is good in a free-for-all match because you get to see what goodies that the opponents bring onto the battlefield. And then, you get to play Dichotomancy. A good combination would be to play Dichotomancy and follow up using the instant spell called "Twincast" that copies the spell.
Keep in mind that this is not good for EDH or Singleton. It is due to those formats not allowing more than one of each card. So far, it seems to be good in a constructed format in which there are bound to be multiples of a card in a deck. Overall, it seems to be an interesting card. One could get a lot out of this spell in a control deck.
