Perhaps the most important safety in dog walking is the leash that holds your dog to you. Next is the collar that is around his neck. Heat or cold also becomes a factor when walking your dog. The other safety factors are the surface you take your dog to walk on, other dogs that he may encounter from walking and the overall safety that will make a walk enjoyable with dog walking safety in mind.
The leash
There are so many leashes to choose from and so many different types of dogs that only you know which leash is appropriate for your companion. If you have a large size dog perhaps a leather leash would be best. This gives you the safety of keeping your dog in control while you're walking. The leash is so important that it can help save your dog's life. It needs to be strong enough that there is no chance of your dog breaking free and running into moving traffic.
The collar
With a dog collar the same rules apply to what applies to the leash. The collar needs to be strong enough that there are no chances of breakaways for your dog to get hurt. Safety is of the utmost importance when walking your dog especially if he is a good size and he's a puller. A body harness is the safest to be used on your dog when walking. It is not only secure but takes the pressure off your dog's neck where regular collars apply it.
Weather factors
If you are in the habit of walking your dog on a daily bases you already know you and your dog will be subjected to all sorts of weather. Be prepared for this to keep your dog safe. Summer heat can be hard on your companion if the temperature rises. Your dog can get heatstroke, so on days such as this chose your time carefully when walking your dog. Be aware that the concrete under his feet can become very hot which can burn your dog's paws, this can be helped with doggie booties. The hours before 10 am and 4 pm are best to walk your dog without risk of heatstroke. Winter time brings its own share of problems.
When walking your dog in winter weather make sure both of you are dressed for the occasion. Dogs can suffer from hypothermia as well as humans. Winter also brings danger under your dog's paws in the form of salt and sand that is added to icy roads. A pair of doggie booties should take care of this problem and keep your dog safe. If the thermometer drops to low you and your dog is probably better safe inside.
When walking your dog safety is your main concern and there are many ways to make sure your dog is safe. A walk at anytime of the year can be enjoyed by you and your dog if your dog's safety comes first when walking.
