When Starbuck's began to expand to selling products outside of their stores, they went beyond simply selling some ground coffee in a bag. The Doubleshot Expresso and Cream was one of the first ready made Starbuck's drinks available outside a Starbuck's store along with their bottled Frappuccino drinks.
The Doubleshot is a small can filled with expresso and milk and as the name implies is the same amount of expresso you'd get by ordering a double of expresso in a coffee shop. The drink is frothy and sold cold, a pleasant surprise for those used to hot and bitter expresso shots. The can is larger than the size of a cup you'd get the double in due to the addition of milk.
After gently shaking up the can, you'll want to tap the top a little before opening it up as the froth will foam out quickly if shaken too much. The initial sip is foam followed by a cold and smooth milky taste.
After the initial first few sips you begin to taste the slightly bitter taste of the expresso but Starbuck's has done a decent job of masking the bitterness with a bit of sugar and lowfat milk. Some might choose to finish off the drink shot style and so they'll get a smooth taste at the start with a slightly bitter and coffee like taste at the end.
The boost you get from the Doubleshot is fast and very, very noticeable. If you have ever drank expresso, you'll know the feeling instantly. If you want a quick and strong boost without having to sip an energy drink or buy a bad tasting energy shot, the Starbuck's Doubleshot is a great option.
However the boost does not last as long as one would want. If you order straight expresso without milk and sugar, you are getting close to pure caffeine. With the Doubleshot you get a good amount of sugar with your shot meaning a crash will come. Sadly it comes a bit too quickly and noticeably; you might be looking for a second serving within 1 to 2 hours.
This drink does contain fat as well due to the milk. Combined with the sugar and calories this might be a replacement for your Starbuck's speciality drink, not a supplement to it. If you like Starbuck's drinks it is worth a try. If you've never had expresso and want to be introduced to it gently, with the full bitterness being masked by sugar and milk, the Doubleshot is the drink for you.
