The top 5 boxers of all time

by Kevin De Silva Piques

Created on: November 11, 2009

Boxing has a long and storied list of great fighters with all different kinds of fighting styles. Trying to determine the top five boxers of all time is difficult and very subjective. Any list compiled would be under heavy criticism, but it is and always will be a fun topic to debate.

Number 5 - Iron Mike Tyson.

He became the youngest man to ever win the heavyweight title at the age of 20 years, 4 months and 22 days old. Tyson had a record of 37 and 0 with 33 knockouts in his first 37 fights. During this period of Tyson's career, it was often noted that his opponents were beaten before he even entered the ring. Tyson was very intimidating, perhaps more than any fighter in history. His vicious knockouts, attitude from the streets and physical power made him a force very hard to deal with. It was not until his personal problems and demons got the best of him did he show diminishing skills and heart in the ring. Tyson in his prime was known for devastating hooks and uppercuts. His punching power, quickness and tenacity made him a great champion.

Number 4 - Roy Jones Jr.

Roy Jones Jr started his professional career with something to prove after being robbed of a gold medal in the 1988 Seoul Olympics by terrible judging. Roy won his first 16 fights all by knockout. His first loss came only when he was disqualified. While winning the fight against Montel Griffen, Jones knocked him down in the 9th round and hit him twice while on the ground. Jones rematched Griffen in his next fight and won by first round knockout. Roy was the Ring Magazine fight of the year in 1994 and won titles in multiple weight classes from middleweight all the way up to heavyweight. Jones is still an active fighter but clearly not the fighter he was in his prime. His record stands at 54 and 5. Jones was faster and quicker than fighters during his prime. He was known for his great defence and thunderous left hooks and straight right hands.

Number 3 - Muhammed Ali

Ali was a three -time heavyweight champion. His speed and grace inside the ring was something not seen before in the heavyweight division. Ali stunned boxing fans by beating the champ Sonny Liston, who many thought was unbeatable. He finished his career with a 56 and 5 record. He had notable wars with Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and George Foreman. Ali was a showman in and out of the ring but his fighting skills were there to back it up. He had a very good jab and his footwork was better than any fighter of any generation.

Number 2 - Rocky
