Deciding whether cosmetic or plastic surgery is right for you

Most, if not all, people have at least one area of their body or face that they aren't very pleased with. Maybe it's the double chin, the breast size, or the saggy bottom. Whatever it is, there is almost always a way to surgically correct it. Not every person is a good candidate for cosmetic surgery, though. It is partially the job of a great physician to determine whether or not the potential client is really and truly going to be able to make it through the procedure, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, as well. It is also up to you, the individual, to consider the things below and be honest about your answers. It isn't right for every person and every person isn't right for cosmetic surgery.

*Physical Health

Plastic surgery, though unnecessary, is still a surgical procedure and you should be sure that you are healthy enough to have it done. If you are having medical issues prior to the surgery, it can make things worse. There may be things that you can do before getting cosmetic surgery that will improve your overall health and promote better results in the end. For instance, if you have diabetes, there are changes that you can make now that will give you a more likely chance for success in the cosmetic surgery. You may need to change your diet to get your blood sugar stable and under control. This is a good change to make anyways, with or without a plastic surgery coming up.

*Who and Why

Who are you having the procedure done for? Plastic surgery is not a decision that you should make solely for the benefit of someone else. The sad truth is that people leave, more often than we want to believe and if they do, you are going to be left with this new face or body. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to please your mate, you should make sure that it is something that you want, as well.

*The "What Ifs"

There are so many unknowns in the world and especially in the world of cosmetic surgery. Consider the things that could go wrong and think about how you would deal with them. For example, if you had breast augmentation and it turned out terrible looking, would you have the funds available to "fix" it? If not, how would you live with the results that weren't what you had in mind? What if you got an infection from the surgery? Is your body healthy enough to fight it off?

*Realistic Goals

What are your goals for the outcome of the surgery? Make sure that they are realistic. You need to fully understand what the results are that you are looking for and communicate them to your surgeon, ready to hear the honest answers. Cosmetic surgery can change more than just your appearance, but don't expect it to repair years of ruined self-confidence with just a nip and a tuck.

*Emotional Well-Being

After cosmetic surgery, there is often a time when depression sets in. You may not be happy with the initial results, especially since most plastic surgery takes a while to heal and look the way that it should. You might also ask yourself why you did this, forgetting for a time what it really was that you were hoping for. Patience is key when you are waiting for the true results, but until you see them, that can be hard. Changing something that you have lived with for years can be a little bit scary, even if you didn't like how things were before, and you need to be prepared to deal with the emotions of that. There is also pain involved and this is harder for some people to deal with than it is for others.
