iPhone app reviews: Manic Marble Free

Manic Marble Free is a good game with a great concept and not so great graphics. For a free app, this game does well in its category. It delivers, it is quite smooth in terms of gameplay, and the price is great. At the same time, however, if you cannot easily play a game that has 3D graphics and the orientation of Manic Marble Free's graphics scare you, this is not the app for you. Unfortunately for me, I am stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to full reviewing this app.

First, the app has a few great features. For example, the app makes very good use of the interactive potential of the iPhone. Players can tilt and jump with their phone and their marble will follow. The music is decent and the premise of the game is quite original. Best of all, this app is free and includes several levels from the full version. Anyone who has been in the position of being indecisive over an app purchase will agree that trying out apps is better than wasting any pennies.

However, the app also has its pitfalls. For instance, the graphics are not that great. Even though they are in 3D, I think that the graphics are tacky at best and deserve a lot of attention. After all, since the developers put so much time into thinking about the point of the game, it's time to make that "point" shine! Better graphics is part of the solution. Moreover, the app can sometimes be difficult to control. Remove any protective fencing or barriers between the path of the marble and the nothingness beside it, and you will have trouble trying not to fall off, too. The lack of really great control over the game can make it frustrating, and people who have little patience may just throw this app aside after the first few minutes of trying it.

Manic Marble Free, however, is a great game for people of all ages. If I am waiting for the bus or for class to start, playing this game for a few minutes can be extremely entertaining. At the same time, I am sometimes so bothered with the graphics that I do not even consider playing this game for a while. That in itself is more of a disappointment than the other "cons" already listed.

All in all, if you do not mind half-decent graphics for a game with great entertainment value, then Manic Marble Free should be an app on your phone.
