If you are about to embark on a freelance assignment there are some things that can help ensure your success. These simple tips can help you not only make your current freelancing assignment easier, but they are helpful for all freelance assignments.

Communication

One of the biggest pitfalls that can occur is a lack of communication with the person who is purchasing your work. Do not fall into the trap of not speaking freely with the person who has contracted you for this assignment. If you feel you need additional information, direction or help make sure they are aware of it as quickly as possible.

Be realistic

Never over extend yourself by making promises to deliver that are nearly impossible for you to keep. It is far better for you to be honest and open with a buyer and tell them what your limitations are than to make a promise and not deliver. Remember, your career as a freelance writer depends on your reputation, and meeting deadlines is part of that reputation.

Be sensible

Do not ever over-represent your skills. If you are asked to do an assignment that you know is impossible for you to achieve perfect results, let your customer know this right away. Not everyone is able to handle a project from start to finish without some issues in between. Better to let this be known as soon as you find them than risk your customers dissatisfaction.

Be committed

If you are taking on any freelance assignment you must be committed to making it a success. Sometimes this means working only an hour or two a day but other times it could mean long, grueling hours doing a tedious task. Make sure you carefully plan your time and ensure that the work you are doing is perfect.

Billing

One of the biggest challenges is knowing when to bill a client. Consider discussing milestone payments for results achieved. This helps your bottom line and also provides you motivation to continue working.

Freelancing can be lonely work. If yo u are the type of person who is able to focus, keep motivated and continue to work on a task regardless of how tedious it may become, freelancing is definitely something you can consider. On the other hand, if you are not able to motivate yourself, need ongoing feedback and input from others, then chances are that you will not be a successful freelancer.

Freelancing is very rewarding work for those who are able to do it. Make a quick assessment of your skills and other traits to determine if you will be a good freelancer. These tips can also help you decide if freelancing projects that you take on can be a success.
