Character analysis: Nobuo Terashima in Nana, by Ai Yazawa

Nobuo "Nobu" Terashima is a major character that is crucial to the storyline of manga created by Ai Yazawa known as "Nana." He does not make his appearance in Nana until several chapters later after the two Nanas: Nana Osaki and Nana Komatsu a.k.a. Hachi get settled into their apartment. While moving, Nana O could not move all of her musical equipment. She asked friend and former band mate Yasu to bring a large speaker to the apartment. With Yasu busy being a lawyer-in-training, Nobu ends up bringing the large speaker over.

Through Nobu, Nana O agrees to reform "Black Stones" a.k.a. "Blast." This is after Nana O relents after Nobu's constant begging along with Yasu telling her to listen to this tape that was created. For awhile, Nobu stays with the two Nanas until he has a place of his own. However, he is usually in conflict with Nana O. This is being that Nana O was not born into a well off family and Nobu was. Should the reformation of Blast not go as well, Nobu still has the inn to fall back on. In this respect, Nana and the other members would not have anything to fall back on. Nobu is the type of person that has the sense of optimism for the most part which counterbalances Nana O's sense of skepticism and disillusionment.

Throughout the story, Nobu remains a positive force. While Yasu is the person that links most of the characters together in Nana, it is Nobu who ends up revealing the connections of most of the characters. This is actually due to Nobu's poor alcohol tolerance in which he ends up spilling many secrets in an intoxicated state.

As the story progresses, it is revealed that Nobu is the first actual friend that Nana O made in school. Everybody else persecuted Nana O. Many accused Nana O of being a prostitute. It is also revealed that it was through Nobu that Nana O ended up in a relationship with Ren Honjo, the current guitarist of the popular Japanese band called "Trapnest."

While Nobu plays a very important part of the story let alone as a member of BLAST, his role virtually remains the same. He remains the same person while everybody else becomes better or worse. However, he does have his own emotional conflicts such as the passion for music. While Nobu's passion for music is the same as Nana O's, he still has something to fall back on.

He does have a brief relationship with Hachi. The feelings for each other are genuine. However, the romance is short lived due to Hachi's poor sense of judgment. Nobu is in the love triangle with Hachi and the leader of the rival band called "Trapnest." While Nobu is the same, he does have emotional pain when Hachi has to leave him for Takumi due to a pregnancy. While the chance is strong that the baby belongs to Takumi, Nobu does have the fear that the child belongs to him. Also, Nobu does retain his role of being a pillar of support for Nana O, Hachi, and some of the other people.

Currently, he is taking a Japanese AV (porn actress) named Yuri Kousaka. Ironically, she looks like Hachi. So far, it is unknown what Nobu's fate will be in the future due to Nana being on a hiatus at the current moment. However, Yuri knows about the past between Nobu and Hachi. Yuri happens to be afraid that Nobu might leave her for Hachi.
