The footwear on offer for winter 2009 can be best described as statement making. If it doesn't feature stand out decoration, it's tall, high, chunky or distressed. If you like a more understated look, you'll probably be best to fall back on your past styles. If statement making sounds right up your alley, read on for an overview of the key trends.

Key shoe trends for winter 2009:

Menswear touches

Many women's shoes feature a touch of masculinity. For example, feminine heels are highlighted with shoe laces and touches of pinking and perforation like you would find on a traditional men's business shoe. Some shoes go a step further and are more of a men's shoe with feminine touches. For example, there are several Oxford flat styles that are just like men's Oxfords. The only distinction is that they are cut to suit a woman's foot and are therefore slightly narrower in the toe area. Think Ellen Degeneres style footwear.

Over the knee boots

Over the knee boots are one of the trendiest boot styles for winter 2009. They were featured at many of the top designer showings and are now rapidly making their way into shoe shops in the Northern hemisphere. Suede styles are popular alongside stretch varieties that conform to the shape of the leg. Victoria Secret has several styles on offer. If you are daring enough to work this look, make sure you wear them with pieces that convey class; otherwise you may wind up looking like you are a sex worker.

Touches of Shearling

Shearling is no longer restricted to Ugg boots, this season it is integrated into fashion footwear. Many boots and bootie styles feature cuffs or trims on the exterior of the shoe. Ugg boots also continue to be popular. Several styles look like a regular shoe on the outside, but offer the comfort of a traditional Ugg on the inside.

The ankle bootie

The ankle bootie continues to be a popular look. The majority of styles feature some form of ornamentation. Think cut out sections, decorative studs, multiple buckles or zips, and laced fronts.

Casual boots

If you are looking for a more practical shoe style, there are boots in complete contrast to sexy over the knee styles and feminine detailed ankle booties. There are chunky block heeled boots with motorcycle style touches, combat inspired boots and rugged made to look weathered styles. Many styles also have a real wild west or country feel. Try brands like Frye and Juicy couture.

Platform and wedge heels

From pumps to fashion boots, Ugg boots and even sneakers; platforms and wedges are the must have heel style. There are many wedges, or lower platform heels that offer a little height, but day to day practicality. Or if you are feeling daring you can add inches to your legs by wearing one of the skyscraper fashion styles. Just remember that even models have managed to trip, or sprain an ankle in some of these styles.
