Tips for dealing with a smelly dog

Dogs smell, it is their nature but when that smell goes beyond a dog that just walked in out of the rain here's a few suggestions for dealing with a smelly dog. The first thing that should be done is have your dog checked by a vet as he could be suffering from dental disease, ear infection or skin allergies all of which can make your dog smelly. Starting with the most obvious things that can make your dog smell here are some reasons and some solutions.

Rolling in nasty things

Your dog still has a built in instinct to cover his own smell. This is the reason when he comes upon anything that is rotting or smells nasty he enjoys rolling in it. It is a basic need to cover up his smell. While it is pleasing to him it may not be so pleasing to the ones around him. This however can be easily remedied by giving your dog a bath. Try using a shampoo that is designed for dogs, human shampoo can irritate a dog's skin. After the bath is complete and he is dry use a little spray of doggie perfume to give him that extra nice smell. If you can't bathe your dog yourself there are many groomers that can do this for you.

Smell of skunk

While we would run from a skunk your dog would probably run after it. There is nothing that compares to this aroma. All is not lost you can bathe your dog in tomato juice which will cut down on the smell. Rub the tomato juice into your dogs coat and let him sit there for approximately 15 minutes. Tomato juice will neutralize the smell. After this procedure bathe your dog as usual. Some people find that by mixing 4c of hydrogen peroxide with 4 tablespoons of baking soda to one teaspoon of dish washing soap is also a good cleaner for this type of smell.

The rear end odor

Some dogs seem to be blessed with too much gas and although it is not a lasting smell it can cause the closest ones to him to move out of the way and sometimes the farthest one from him to do the same. Some dogs can be very potent. If you have one of these dogs you can look to the type of food your feeding him. If you have chosen a cheaper brand of dog food you are feeding your dog mostly fillers that really does very little for his nutritional needs. It is better to put out a little extra money on a good dog food you will not only cut down on the amount of gas produced by your dog but you will also help him to be much healthier. Another reason that smells can emanate from your dog's rear end is if he has long hair it may get soiled when he goes poop. This gets embedded in his fur
