Resolutions are really just goals. It is customary to focus on our goals at the start of a new year because it seems like a fresh start, a chance to do things differently. Writers can benefit greatly from setting new year's resolutions because it provides focus and direction to all your effort and you will most likely be a bit more production just from the process of defining them.
So what are some great resolutions for Helium writers? A few suggestions are listed below.
Write a Defined Amount Everyday
Committing to write everyday, even if it is just one or two articles develops a routine. It also forces you to produce even when you may not feel like it and this is critical for all writers, aspiring and seasoned veterans.
Dedicate Time to Market Your Writing
Making it as a writer is not just about cranking out quality articles and posting them on Helium. You need to spend some time pushing your product in front of readers, whether this involves uploading to Digg, Stumbling them, blogging about them or feeding them to your Facebook profile.
Spend Some Time Researching New Markets
Writers should not depend on only one site for all their income, no matter how great it is. The risk is just too great, because policies can change that affect your bread and butter and then you need to start all over from scratch.
Identify Time Wasting Activities
Helium offers the Community Boards for a bit of mingling and diversion, which all online writers need, but of course the internet itself is a smorgasbord of distraction, not to mention everything else that is going on at home, like the TV and friends dropping by.
Donate to a Charity
Helium offers writers a golden opportunity to use their writing to make a difference. It is easy to click the button and donate the proceeds from one or two of your articles to charity. Maybe you can celebrate every milestone with donating one article to your favorite charity.
Connect with Friends and Family
Writers need to take time to connect with people in the real world. It is easier than you think to become swallowed up by writing online. You should make the effort to go out with friends before they stop calling and your family starts stepping over you and your laptop on their way out the door. Taking time away actually makes you a better writer, so it's okay to let go for a bit.
These are just a few suggestions, but of course resolutions should mean something to you if they are going to be realized. Take the time to evaluate what is important to you as a writer and jot them down so you can remember what you should be focusing on during the year.
