How too much homework undermines learning

The efficacy of homework is an issue that has sparked much debate over time. Proponents on both sides of the debate have presented what they view as valid reasons for and against homework. However, since homework continues to be an integral part of the teaching and learning process, there has been a slight shift in the debate. People are now focusing on whether homework given is adequate or too much for students, and the benefits or ill effects of that.

Homework should be given to reinforce work done in class and generally this is what is done. There are instances, though in the minority, where teachers give too much homework and this creates tension between the school and the home. The reasons for too much homework are varied but the effects are usually the same.

Parents who complain of children having too much homework usually point out that this robs them of quality family time. They speak of children coming home from school and spending hours trying to complete assignments. These parents also talk of sacrificing hours to assist the children. To them, the time spent doing homework is stressful and tensed and it lessens the hours that they have to spend leisure time with the family and it also diminishes the quality of family interactions.

In addition, parents view the stress and tension caused during that time as impacting negatively on the relationship with their children. Students become frustrated and upset when they feel overwhelmed by the amount of homework. This frustration is usually passed on to parents and other members of the family. As parents press for students to complete all assigned tasks, tension increases and may cause a breakdown in communication and so put a strain on the parent-child relationship.

Similarly, it has been claimed that the stress of too much homework can have adverse effects on students' health. Stress at any age can cause a number of illnesses. The student who cannot cope with too much homework may become depressed and withdrawn and even suicidal. This may also lead to nervous breakdowns and other mental and social issues.

It is a fact that students need to engage in play and socialization. Too much homework limits the time that students have to go outside to play and to interact with friends. This in itself can impair their development. Studies have shown that 10 minutes of homework in the lower grade is sufficient and that this should increase by ten minutes each year as students move up from grade to grade. In this way students will have adequate play and socialization time.

Homework should not be ruled out since it has its benefits but educators must use this tool in a way that is beneficial to students learning, not for their detriment. Although too much homework may not be seen as a widespread issue, its impact on students must always be considered.
