Natural home remedy treatments for heartburn

Heartburn is the painful burning sensation felt in the esophagus that causes uneasiness. At times, it may cause acidic secretions to regurgitate back into the esophagus from the stomach. The effect of heartburn can spread even to the neck. There are many foodstuffs that can be a cause of heartburn, but there are several natural home remedies that can provide relief to heartburn.



Chewing gums after meals can stimulate the secretion of saliva into the mouth. It will aid in the secretion of excess saliva. Saliva neutralizes acidic secretions.

Banana is another natural antacid that can coat the stomach lining to neutralize acidic secretion and it relieves heartburn. It also stimulates the production of mucus and that can act as a barrier between stomach lining and gastric acids. Fresh or dried bananas can bring relief in minutes.

Coconut water taken several times a day decreases acidity and reduces the symptoms of heartburn. Taking coconut water 4-5 times a day is considered ideal.

Chewing a few blanched almonds can bring relief to acidity and heartburn. It is important to chew them well. Chewing some basil leaves, or herbs like catnip or fennel seeds also helps.

Apple cider vinegar also works wonders to bring relief to heartburn. Mix it with equal quantity of honey in warm water and it can be taken during meals.

Root ginger added to boiling water and taken as tea can relax the walls of the esophagus. It brings relief to acidity and heartburn. Root ginger can even provide great relief for nausea as it can calm the nerves. Root ginger is also available in the capsule form commercially.

Yogurt which can multiply the good bacteria and increase the body immunity from microbes, works for heartburn too. The probiotic bacteria can bring heartburn relief too. Yogurt with live cultures help in better digestion of food.

Mixing some baking soda in water and taken after meals can neutralize the acidity in the stomach. It acts as an antacid. It may not taste that good, but it can neutralize acidity and relieve heartburn. Using high amount of baking soda must be avoided and this remedy must be avoided if you have high blood pressure or if you are on sodium restricted diet.

Besides these remedies, it is important to avoid bending at the waist level after heavy meals to prevent heartburn. It is important to bend at the knee level to prevent acid reflux. Keeping the head raised with a pillow at bedtime can also prevent heartburn
