muscle mass is harder to maintain than fat, so it will maintain just the muscle mass that it needs to keep up with the demands placed upon it and no more, storing any excess intake as fat against a time when those reserves might be needed. In order to increase the amount of muscle in the body it must be subjected to increased demand and forced to grow to the point that the demand can be then met. At some point in time a limit is reached that is coded into our genes. A person with small bones and a delicate frame is not genetically designed to carry the same amount of muscle mass that a larger, more heavily framed person can carry, and yet the desire is still there to be bigger, more massive and stronger. Enter the anabolic steroid.
These compounds can give us what nature declined to provide, that is, as means by which we can cheat the genetic limits contained within our cells. Take a look at any bodybuilding magazine and this principle becomes crystal clear. Now bear in mind that all the bodybuilding publications are owned by supplement companies and exist solely for the purpose of marketing dietary supplements that are purported to give us the gains that we seek in a safe, legal manner. Here is the dirty secret: Not a single one of the professional bodybuilders whose pictures appear in the advertisements for these supplements got their massive, ripped physiques from using the stuff their images are being used to sell. Not by a mile. Without exception those herculean chiseled bodies are the product of modern chemistry. There is literally no other way to achieve the type of gains and to maintain the type of mass that these huge mounds of shredded muscle are able to maintain unless you happen to the genetic freak that comes along about once in a billion births. This is the hard reality of the bodybuilding world.
So, where does that leave the rest of us? As is the case with nearly every other facet of life it comes down to an individual decision based upon a person's unique goals and his or her own analysis of the risk/reward component that such a decision entails. Please don't misunderstand: A person who goes all natural and lifts heavy will get much bigger and much stronger over the course of time but at some point they will inevitably reach their genetic potential and further progress will be much more difficult if not entirely impossible. Diet and rest cycles as well as training techniques and lifting programs all have their place in this discussion and volumes
