Bulletin board ideas: North Dakota

Also known as the Peace Garden State, North Dakota is located near the American-Canadian border and is home to some of the United States' farmland. However, many American students do not know much about this state, and many others, even though it plays an important role in the American economy. If you are a primary school teacher teaching in the United States, you may want to teach about the 50 states that all contribute to American history, from the past to the present and in the future. In order to do so, you do not even need to create a whole new lesson plan. Instead, make good use of one of the most underused and underrated classroom teaching materials available: the bulletin board.

Your bulletin board may just be hanging on the wall and is probably covered with newsletters, guidelines and rules, and other sorts of paper that your students rarely read. Take off those sheets of paper and start preparing your bulletin board for a North Dakota theme. Add a nice colorful background and trim. These supplies and more can be bought from your local teaching supplies store, or from your arts and crafts store.

After you have decorated the bulletin board, you are ready to start adding information. History is always a nice addition, especially since the history of each of the 50 states has contributed to the history of the U.S. as a whole. When you write North Dakota's history, it is important to emphasize that this state was once inhabited by Native Americans, and that the state was effectively named "after" the Dakota Indians. Other than that, it is also a great idea to use short sentences and paragraphs.

Next, add a pictures section. This section can be made up of pictures of the landscape, of the people who live there (including the Native Americans who once populated this area of the United States), and places to see and visit. Although depicting touristy areas can be a good thing, it is also important to depict the natural beauty of this state, which has a nice landscape that includes many types of terrain.

When you are finished adding all of this information, it's time to add the title. Use cut out letters, either handmade or store-bought. You can buy these cut out alphabets from a dollar or discount store, but you can also find them online and print them out, then cut them. They will also need to be colored in for extra appeal. Once you're done with the board, make sure to go over the information with your kids!
