What to avoid when writing a term paper

Writing term papers is not every student's favorite hobby. However, writing term papers - and writing them well - are required if you want to pass many of your courses. Fortunately, it does not have to be a painful process. Although it is easy for many students to remember what to do when writing a term paper, they often forget what they should avoid. Here are a few tips that will help you avoid some common pitfalls associated with writing term papers.

- Incoherent or Jumbled Thesis

The thesis is an important component of the term paper, but many students fail to create a coherent thesis that is not filled with mumbo-jumbo. Remember, the thesis should effectively guide your paper, and you will find yourself looking back on it often as you write the paper. You should also take care to create a thesis that will fit well with the length of the paper. An overly broad topic that requires too much discussion is not suitable for a 5 page term paper.

- No organization

One of the main things that professors and teachers look for in a well-written paper is how well the writer has organized the information. Neatly organized information not only allows for easier reading, but it may also add coherence and understanding to your points. Many papers are not as good as they can be because they lack organization.

- Spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors

These are easy to make but just as easy to avoid. As you write your paper, whether you write it by hand or type it on your computer, always reread every few sentences aloud. Do not rely on spellcheck to do your dirty work for you. Always make time to have someone else read your paper. Sometimes, a fresh set of eyes will catch typos that you overlooked.

- No counterargument

Many papers need counter-arguments in order to make the writer's argument(s) even stronger. This is generally done in argumentative papers, but these counter-arguments are essential to many other types of papers, as well. Even research and expositional papers may need this type of argument once in a while.

These are the big four pitfalls that are most common in term papers. Generally, students will know what information they will include, and the words are there, but sometimes the execution of those words may need a little tweaking. As with all term papers, you should avoid all of the errors listed above but do not avoid making extra time to have someone else proofread your work.
