What earthly human could write and perform a song about a woman suffering an assault and mesmerize the world to sing and dance in unison to the words as well as the music as if assault were celebratory in nature? The answer is simple. No one other than the late Michael Jackson and that is exactly what the King of Pop did with his 1988 song, "Smooth Criminal", when he asked, "Annie are you okay? Are you okay Annie?"
Smooth Criminal is one of many masterful song performances moviegoers can enjoy while viewing "Michael Jackson's This Is It", a documentary film featuring rehearsal performances, interviews, and backstage footage from what would have been Michael Jackson's "This Is It" final concert tour.
The tour was gearing up to take Jackson fans by storm with modernized renditions of fan favorites from "I Want You Back" to "Thriller" to "Bad" to "Black or White" . This Is It was set to take place in London at the O2 Arena during the months of April through June of 2009. All fifty performance dates had sold out. Due to Jackson's sad, untimely, and tragic death, occurring just days before his stage performances would have begun, the concert would never get off the ground.
Moviegoers experiencing the This Is It documentary will get to see how Michael Jackson, while reenacting Smooth Criminal, was set to mimic his video version of the song in some areas and to add new dimensions to his performance in other areas. Viewers experience how Jackson's stage performance would have incorporated updated computer technology, modern effects devices, and renewed directorship to stir up Jackson's audience.
This Is It, directed by Kenny Ortega, provides viewers a glimpse into Michael Jackson's onstage life. From backup dance performer interviews and selections to minute details of what Jackson expected from his dancers and musicians, This Is It shows viewers what a perfectionist Jackson was and how he inspired his workers to give as much of themselves as he gave of himself.
Computerized visual effects played tremendous roles in bringing to life Jackson's thoughts and feelings for pieces like "Earth Song" that unveils a young girl interacting with butterflies in a rainforest. Computerization operated like a multiplication magician when used to increase the body count in scenes from "Bad" and "They Don't Really Care About Us".
Parts of the documentary might bring tears to some viewer eyes such as in the Earth Song piece wherein the little girl tries to save a plant in the midst
