It is far more difficult to write about something that you do not care about and almost impossible to write to your maximum ability about it. This is one among many reasons that in order to write something of importance it must matter to you, and when you write about things that matter about you then that writing is as beneficial to you as it is to your audience, and this is true of all forms of writing.
Perhaps the easiest to see this is in fiction. In fiction it is vital that what you write means something to you. This is one of the reasons that the write what you know advice. Often this advice is taken to write about more physical things but this advice is really most useful when it is talking about emotions, and life experiences. You can write about your work and be more accurate than someone who has not done the same job but only those who really understand it will notice. On the other hand write about how you felt when you fell in love or when a loved one died and not only will it be true but it will be beneficial to both you and your audience.
In writing non fiction this is a little more difficult because you are not typically writing about emotions but where it does become valuable is when you write about things that interest you are you care about then the information that you gather is interesting and beneficial to you and because you care about it you are more likely to know what will interest other people who are interested in similar subjects.
Finally, you have journalism. This is similar to non fiction but often much shorter and so it is more common for people to write about what is needed rather than what a person wants but by finding the value in the story for yourself then you will be able to make the person who is reading about it care more and learn something yourself.
No matter what you are writing if you learn to find the parts of the story that are beneficial to you then your writing is going to be better and more importantly than that you will continue to improve not only your own writing but it will help to improve your life as you move through the emotional trials, learn about things you care about.
