The 1930's - "Those Were the Days"
Burns and Allen on the CBS Sunday night radio show,
percolator on wood stove with flames' golden glow.
Father softly chuckling while eating jam and his toast,
all for the likes of a photo in "Saturday Evening Post."
Nickel bought lots with a visit to the local candy store,
gum drops, licorice whips, red peppermint sticks galore,
granted to many a depression child with sweet visions
of sugar plum treats on a wish list they couldn't ignore.
Saturday afternoon's matinee "bang" "bang" shoot out,
cowboy Tom Mix with faithful horse Blue in a standout,
with Indians and big, bad guys in an interesting storyline,
leading to a "happily ever after" ending in grand sunshine.
Grandmas plump in aprons, happily canning plum preserves,
Quilting bees, ladies aid, young girls in the military reserves.
Women's styles, both hair and dress, were the "cat's meow,"
geometric coiffs, peek-a-boo ankles, could raise any eyebrow.
Seniors say the good 'ol days have made their mark in time,
That we will never see such bliss, matter not reason or rhyme,
Those were the days; these are our times, hard as they may be,
Believe or not, the "good 'ol days are here now for you and me.
