A lot of good songs were released in the year of 2009 and more is still to come. So far a lot of different artists has managed to break both their own sales records as well as the records of others making 2009 a very good year for music. This is a list of some of the best songs released in 2009.
Flo Rida - Right Round
'Right Round' was released in January of 2009 and was the first single from Flo Rida's hit album R.O.O.T.S. The song is sampled over Dead or Alive's 'You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)' single from 1984.
The song received mixed reviews after its release but the critics were more positive than negative when it came to the big picture. Most of the negative critic of the song was pointed at featured artist Ke$ha for her vocal performance on the track.
Commercially the song enjoyed great success from the start. Right Round peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold 636,000 digital copies in its first week. The copies sold in its first week are the most ever and as a result of that breaking the record of Flo Rida's own 2007 hit single 'Low'. The song went on to be certified 3x platinum in America with a sale of over 3.5 million copies.
Beyonce - Halo
'Halo' was released in January of 2009 and was the fourth single on Beyonce's album 'I am... Sasha Fierce'. The song was originally made for Leona Lewis but ultimately ended up being Beyonce's because Lewis did not have time to record it.
The song received a lot of praise from critics calling it a perfectly produced track and comparing it in style to 'Umbrella' and 'Bleeding Love'. Also Beyonc's exceptional vocal performance is recognized and in a time where love songs are not exactly rare Halo shines above the rest.
Halo received a lot of internal success reaching the top 10 in twenty countries. On the Hot 100 the song debuted at number 93 and peaking at number 5. More impressively the song stayed in the top 40 of the hot 100 for more than 30 weeks. In America the single is certified 2x platinum.
Jay-Z - Run This Town
'Run This Town' was released in July of 2009 and was the second single from Jay-Z's album 'The Blueprint 3'. The song samples 'Someday in Athens' by the Greek band 'The 4 levels of existence'.
The song features a verse by Kanye West while the chorus is sung by Rihanna. Some critics say that Jay-Z does not bring his a-game on the song and that Rihanna's vocal performance sounds like she is on autopilot while the majority of the critics praise the song and Kanye's performance.
On the charts the song peaked at number three on the Hot 100. In the UK the song reached number one after its second day of release.
