In the beginning it was pantomime and opera were the main form of musical story telling in entertainment, keep going forward to the Twentieth century Jazz, Big Band, and Swing was perfect for dancing and lent itself very easily to the Hollywood's personality of song dance and show so we saw many movie musical records and came out and almost all were extremely popular. As the years went on most musicals held to the 60's these were not as prevalent more upbeat music started appearing in these musicals that many know fondly such as Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, The Music Man, Hello Dolly, and The King and I, West Side Story. If you keep going forward to the 70's you'll find through musicals like the The Oz, Grease, and Jesus Christ SuperStar that more rock was being incorporated. Soon it basically became huge successes as the era of music changed forever. Musicals still continued to use both upbeat newer music but also the classic 20's and 30's music enjoyed by many are still prevalent today. Bands like the Beetles, Queen, and Bette Midler, paved the way for newer musicals such as Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat, Cats, Little Shoppe of Horrors which are all major themes of most musically minded kids today. With the most recent High School Musical we see that song and dance hasn't far from left our lives. The truth is every generation has a soft spot in its heart for song and dance. Let us take a look at the latest releases of Musical DVDs whether young or old.
Ah the memory of mom and dad and all the siblings gathering around the TV to watch the annual showing of The Wizard of Oz. Although many a younger child didn't quite make it through and most didn't understand the real point, this movie has been popular amongst kids everywhere. Moms and Dads can probably recall the drama behind the making of the movie when a member of the crew ended up dying in the production or was that just a rumor? Ah, the world may never know! These are just some of the things that make us smile when we think of such movies. In September of 2009, the studio released a two Blu-ray DVD collectors set celebrating the movie's 70th Anniversary which include all the features of the previously released 2005 Anniversary version.
