The most socially and environmentally conscious companies

by Erica Michelle

Created on: November 09, 2009

There are many companies out there, each with their own agendas and intentions in the global market. However, certain companies are outstanding, in that they place value on social and environmental responsibility, and follow through with their goals of creating harmony in the social and environmental spheres. The following is a compilation of companies who do work in different areas of life, from the food industry to conservation work. These companies typically value using local and sustainable resources, creating positive environments for their employees, and educating their communities to empower the individual. Their contributions to their own community and the global community are making a difference in creating a more peaceful and beautiful world to inhabit.

Crudessence, Montreal, Quebec.

If you've not heard of the raw food movement yet, now is your chance to be informed. It's not all carrots and celery sticks. Many who eat a primarily raw and plant-based diet have taken great leaps in creativity as to what kind of food is possible. At Crudessence, a Montreal based company which runs a catering service, a resto-boutique, and is also involved in many community affairs related to boosting health awareness, salad is only the beginning. The dedicated chefs at company headquarters produce a daily array of delights including raw cakes and pies, scrumptious soups and flatbreads, and even sushi. Matthew Gallant and David Cot, founders of the company, are committed to their mission of creating health in the person and the environment. And with organic live-food uncooking classes, appearances at various educational conferences in the holistic field, and a focus on sourcing local and seasonal ingredients, their vision shines through.

The Buckminister Fuller Institute, Brooklyn, New York.

Buckminister Fuller, a scientist, visionary, and all-around profound man, inspired millions with his ideas and actions. He is the creator of the legendary geodesic dome, a life size version of the Bucky Ball: a 60 sided carbon molecule. The institute is an educational and community hub which extends Fuller's work by empowering artists, architects, engineers, and other passionate environmentalists to discover and implement solutions which, in their words, Radically advance human well being and the health of our planet's ecosystems. The Institute hosts a yearly challenge with a 100 000$ prize for the most promising idea with potential for improving the health of human and planet.
