While shopping for Thanksgiving's feast,
I spied the most enormous beast,
thirty pounds of meat at least!
I hauled it to my cart.
"I think you're buying too much stuff",
my husband offered off-the-cuff,
"twenty pounds would be enough,
this turkey's off the chart!"
"We're feeding twenty people dear,
the most we've had in any year,
you really have no need to fear,
meal planning is my art."
(Thanksgiving Day)
The phone rang as I washed my hands,
my sister had just changed her plans,
gave in to her in-laws' demands,
was sad we'd feast apart.
My brother, he can't make it either,
both his kids woke with a fever,
wife's sick too, he shouldn't leave her,
God Bless his faithful heart.
And then my husband's brother called,
to say their trip had been forestalled.
hit by a freak November squall,
their flight could not depart.
My husband strained to hide his smirk,
he knew I'd gone through so much work,
so he tried not to be a jerk,
which, trust me, was quite smart.
I said "that leaves the four of us,
we really shouldn't make a fuss,
besides, leftovers are a must."
My spouse vowed not to start.
So that is all, my story's done,
leftovers until Kingdom come.
The upshot of being so dumb?
Some wisdom to impart.

The room: white, austere and cold,
Not a pleasant place to be.
And there sitting on the floor,
Two frightened children of three.

I had the menu all planned out,
I knew what I was making.
The turkey, stuffed and in the pan,
The pumpkin pies were baking.
Your Leftovers
Another holiday has come and gone.
All the family has packed there bags
And left for the long trip home.
