With the current economic climate and the emphasis on reducing carbon emissions many drivers are looking to downsize their daily drives to save money and go 'green'.
And with the UK being a prime market for small cars there are certainly plenty to choose from. But which are the best small cars available? Here's our run down of the top 5 small cars for the UK.
At number five is the ever-popular Renault Clio. The Clio has, like many small cars these days, benefitted from an increase in size over the years and is far from cramped inside. Even three-door models boast excellent leg room in the rear and all models boast five-star crash protection. Under the bonnet is a raft of different engines to choose from, whether you prefer petrol or diesel, and for those looking for ultra efficiency and cost effective motoring, the Clio comes with new Eco2 models boasting CO2 emissions as low as 115g/km. For those looking for more of a thrill from their small hatchback, there's also the Clio Renaultsport 200 models with 200bhp and a more focussed driving experience for the keener driver.
Next on our top five is the very cool Toyota iQ; an excellent car if you're after solid quality and reliability, as well as something a bit funky. It's not as big as the Renault and has only three seats, but it's been designed for the city where size is less of a necessity. There are only two engines on offer a 1.0-litre petrol and a 1.33-litre petrol but both are ample for pottering around town. Parking is a breeze thanks to its teeny proportions too. It's beautifully finished too and comes with Toyota's excellent reputation for reliability.
At three is the versatile and recently updated Volkswagen Polo. The new Polo has been given a new grown-up look, bringing it in line with the new Golf . And it now feels much more like a baby Golf too, thanks to a huge improvement in refinement and build quality. The Polo is a very capable car and suits all kinds of environments; even holding its own on the motorway. And although VW is a higher-end brand than most the Polo is excellent value for money.
At number two and it was a close call between this and our number one is the superb Ford Fiesta. The new car has been met with rave reviews from both media and consumers since it was launched earlier this year. It's a bigger car than the previous Fiesta, so there's decent space inside, and it's now a much cooler car to own, thanks to its funky looks and stylish interior. It is also one of the best handling small cars in its segment. There's an excellent range of engines to choose from, whilst Ford also offers an Econetic version with class-leading CO2 emissions of just 98g/km putting it in the cheapest tax band and it will manage over 60mpg!
Topping our top 5 though is the superb and iconic Fiat 500 which gets our vote as the best small car for the UK. Fiat has recreated the original 500 whilst still bringing it bang up to date for the noughties. The Fiat 500 isn't just a car, but a fashion statement. With an uber-funky interior too, you're getting a lot of car for the money. Fiat has also recently launched a convertible version the 500C for the full retro experience. And those wanting a bit more 'go' can opt for the sought-after 500 Abarth with its racing pedigree. Whether around town or for enjoying around the British countryside, the Fiat 500 is enjoyed and adored by all.
