Pine cone Christmas crafts for kids

by Beatrix Kiddo

Created on: November 09, 2009

Pine cones, natures very own, can be used to create various Christmas decorations, including ornaments, wreaths, and photo holders. Here are some pine cone Christmas crafts for kids that are not only fun, they can create memories to share in the future.

Pine Cone Ornament:

Items needed would be one medium pine cone (found outside), two bowls, newspaper, standard glue, fake snow flakes (found at your local craft store), one 6" piece of floral wire, and one small thin 6" piece of green ribbon.

First have the child place the glue into the bowl until it covers the bottom portion for dipping. Place the snow flakes into the other bowl. Have the child dip the pine cone into the glue and then into the snow flakes, make sure that they cover the bottom of the pine cone with snow flakes. They can dip the pine cone again if needed. Place the pine cone onto the newspaper and allow to dry.

Have the child tie the floral wire around the top portion where there are no snowflakes so that they can lift the pine cone freely by the floral wire. Have the child tie the ribbon into a bow where the floral wire meets the pine cone. Last, have the child turn the end of the wire into a hook-like formation. They can attach their pine cone ornament to a tree by their hook creation or simply twist the upper wire onto a branch of the tree. They have just created the pine cone ornament, a beautiful addition to any holiday tree.

Pine Cone Wreath:

Items needed would be a small to medium sized wreath (found at your local craft store), pine cones from outside (approximately 12), 12 pieces of 4" floral wire, one 1' piece of floral wire, and one 2" thick 1' long red ribbon.

Have the child wrap the floral wire on the backside of the pine cones through the slots of the pine cones so that they can pick up each pine cone with the floral wire. After this the child should wrap each pine cone onto a branch of the wreath in a clock formation beginning with placing one pine cone on top in the center, bottom in the center, side to the center, and the opposite side to the center. The other pine cones will be placed in the areas resembling that of a clock, 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, and 11. Once the child has all of the pine cones onto the wreath they will notice that it actually does appear just as the numbers do on a clock.

Have the child wrap up their project by twisting the long piece of floral wire in the center of the ribbon then tying the ribbon into a bow. Last, have the child place the bow on the center
