Motorcycle helmet laws were always a source of irritation to me. A rider since the age of eleven, wearing a helmet encroached on the freedom I felt, the main attraction to riding in the first place. As much as possible, I like to travel uncluttered, the wind in my face. A helmet changes everything, but not for the better. If there is anyplace your senses need to be acute, it's operating a motorcycle, and helmets diminish at least two of them.
Here's the thing. Imagine yourself in a classroom. Near the back, a noisy fan on either side. As the lecturer moves about the room, you strain to hear over the fans, and when the speaker moves to either side, you can't even employ your peripheral vision to track them.
Riding a motorcycle is risky enough without depriving yourself of these vital senses. Have you reached the age of autonomy in your little piece of the planet? Do you consider yourself sentient enough to decide, based on facts and experience, what's best for yourself? If your decision is to strap some fiberglass to your noggin, you sure don't need my permission! If I decide not to, why should I need yours?
